In 1960, three leading Arkansas funeral directors met to discuss forming a life insurance company. The purpose of the new company was to market small funeral life insurance policies to supplement the founders' burial association insurance.

From the first meeting, the group grew to 20. These 20 funeral directors organized SFLIC with an investment of $40,000.
